What to Wear for a Branding Photoshoot

One of the questions I’m asked most on branding photoshoots is what people should wear. Of course one of the main objectives is to look as good as possible in photos but that’s not the only thing that matters.

It makes sense that you want to look good in your photos, professional or not but there are a few others things you need to consider when choosing what to wear for a branding shoot that ultimately introduces who you are to prospective customers.

Here are a few things to think about when it comes to choosing outfits for your shoot.

KNOW YOUR BODY
Everyone’s body is different; shapes, sizes, skin tones, all of it. Which means certain cuts and styles of clothing suits each of is differently. I for example, cannot and will not wear anything that is A-line. It’s just absolutely not for me and I have made my peace with that. Similarly, for you, there’ll be certain types of clothing that suit your body and some that don’t work - it’s totally normal. So figure out what works best for you and what doesn’t and choose from there. Sidenote: While you may LOVE bagging clothing (same) it doesn’t always translate in photos. My advice if baggy clothing is your go-to is choose one baggy piece and one fitted piece or choose a flowy dress that cinches at the waist. Having some shape is important.

COMFORT IS KEY
Flowing on from knowing your body is comfort. Something I have said more times than anyone wants to hear is, if you feel comfortable you look comfortable and absolutely nobody wants to look awkward in photos showcasing their business (though you feel it, I know). So choose outfits that not only suit your body but that you feel comfortable and good in. How you feel on the day is so important because I know it can be tough being in front of the camera, but it should also be a little bit fun.

COLOURS THEORY
If you wouldn’t wear mixed neons on a normal day, you really don’t need to start on photo day. I know you want to stand out from all the noise online but dressing outrageously if that’s not who you are is not the way to go about it. Together, you and I will collaborate to tell your story in a unique way and using locations, props and your pretty face, you will stand out. I usually recommend colours that won’t take away from said pretty face, no clashing patterns or anything too bold. I like to recommend neutrals, smart tailored pieces, colours that go nicely together and bring out your skin tone or one singular pattern HOWEVER as I said above, comfort is key and we are showcasing the real, incredible you so you need to choose pieces you love, that showcase your personality and allow you to shine too (not just the clothes).

A GOOD ATTITUDE
Like I said, I understand being in front of the camera can be confronting but it’s also meant to be fun and not too serious. If you’re working with me, I’m always happy to tell you how to move your body. crack dumb jokes and talk to you while we shoot so you feel as comfortable as possible. And honestly, most people relax within five minutes and end up saying they had a much better time than they thought they would. So bring some positivity with you, have fun and let me guide you and that will shine through in your shots too.
